« Premiers pas en terre froide »
This photographic series recounts the fictional story of several members of a troglodyte civilization as they leave their subterranean world to explore the surface. At the project’s inception, Justin Matringe designed the clothing worn by these imaginary figures: pieces that are oxidized and altered by time, reflecting their adaptation to a humid and mineral subterranean environment.
In keeping with this aesthetic of transformation, we chose an oxidizable metallic medium to present the images. The photographs thus appear flaked and marked by rust, as if they have been consumed by the elements. The textures of the plates echo those of the garments: they, too, seem to have been shaped by the hostile conditions of the caves. A sensory continuity is established among the bodies, the materials, and the presentation media.
